Michelle Hamilton was in bed at her Monterey home. It was 10 p.m. and she was ready to sleep when her phone rang. “Tyler has overdosed,” said the house manager from a sober living facility in Sunnyvale where Hamilton’s 19-year-old son, Tyler Hamilton Valdivia, had stayed over the past three months. “Is he OK?” Michelle Hamilton asked. She has been dreading this for months.
“No, Michelle,” the manager replied. Valdivia’s roommate had found him collapsed on the bathroom floor. “I’m on my way,” Hamilton said. She rushed into her car, shaken by what might happen next.
